The NRA Basic Pistol course is conducted over a 2-day period, part classroom and part range where you will be shooting a handgun.
This is an instructor lead course.
The class begins at 8:00am till 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, with about an hour for a lunch break.
Arrive early in the morning as you must check in prior to the start of the class.
You can bring lunch if you desire and eat in the classroom.
To pass the class and obtain a certificate you must attend both days and pass a shooting qualification!
The basic pistol course is designed for both new and experienced shooters.
This class satisfies the requirements for a concealed carry permit in Wyoming and Colorado.
Other states also allow this course to satisfy the training requirement for a concealed carry permit. Check your state requirements to see if applicable.
The classroom includes topics such as
- Safe gun handling
- Identifying the parts of a handgun for revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.
- Differences between single and double action handguns.
- Proper aiming and shooting techniques.
- Shooting positions
- Selecting a handgun
- Ammunition
- How to clean, maintain, and store your handguns
During the course, you will shoot approximately 150-200 rounds of ammunition.
You will need to bring a handgun, see below if you do not have a handgun, ammunition, cleaning kit, ear protection, and eye protection (if you wear glasses with safety lenses, they will be fine) to the class.
The cost for this course is $75.00 for members of the club, $100.00 for non-members, or if you are an employee of an education facility (school district, community college or university, private school, or a pre-school) the cost is $50.00.
If you do not have a handgun, CRPC can supply you with a pistol for the class.
Please contact us to inquire about using one of the club’s firearms. It is recommended that you bring your own firearm and ammunition.
NO .357 magnum, .44 magnum, 5.7×28, .357 Sig, or 17HMR ammo is allowed.
If you have something unique that you plan on bringing to shoot, please contact us PRIOR to the course for approval.
Single action handguns cannot be used for the shooting portion of this course.
Wear comfortable shoes as we will be standing for up to 2 hours while shooting.
We recommend NOT wearing v-neck or low cut shirts or blouses as spent brass can lodge against your skin and burn you.
During the winter months we strongly recommend wearing a sweater (hoody jacket, etc.) as it can be a little cold on the range, when the exhaust fans bring in outside air.
STUDENTS – MAKE SURE YOUR FIREARMS ARE UNLOADED AT HOME before you bring them to class.
In addition to the NRA Course, a lawyer will discuss the legal aspects of using a firearm for self-defense as well as a thorough discussion of "shoot/don’t shoot" scenarios.
We try to maintain one-to-one instructor to student ratio while on the range to help ensure you are safe when firing and to coach you through the learning process.
This course is something all shooters seem to enjoy and you will come away learning more than you would expect for a course of this type.
